RIDC Sells 13-Acres in Duquesne to Union Railroad Company

Duquesne, PA — March 25, 2024 — Regional Industrial Development Corporation of Southwestern Pennsylvania (RIDC) has sold a 13-acre parcel in RIDC’s City Center of Duquesne to Union Railroad Company, LLC.  Union Railroad will develop the land as a rail-to-truck and truck-to-rail transloading facility to expand its offerings to rail-served industries. The purchase price was $400,000.

The parcel will expand Union Railroad’s existing footprint in Duquesne transloading, material laydown, categorizing, and preparation of a variety of commodities for the next leg in their journey.  Long-haul shipments of goods often involve multiple shipping companies, multiple modes of transit, or both.

With the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission building an extension to the Mon/Fayette Expressway, this site will be a focal point for manufacturers needing multimodal options for the movement of goods.

“This land is a great addition to the Union Railroad footprint, creating a 20-acre transload site that will provide optionality for existing and new rail customers,” said J.W. Burwinkel, Union Railroad’s Senior Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer.

“A lot of positive things are happening in the Mon Valley as growing businesses see opportunities for new facilities on sites that were centers of economic activity in the past,” said Donald F. Smith, Jr., RIDC President. “The Duquesne property, along with other RIDC Mon Valley properties, like Industrial Center of McKeesport, Keystone Commons, and Carrie Furnace, are providing homes to job creating companies that are driving the next generation of growth in our region.”

“Partnerships are what make economic development projects possible,” said Timothy White, RIDC Senior Vice President. “And our partners in government—Mayor Scott Adams, Senator Jim Brewster, Representative Matthew Gergely, and Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis, who previously represented this district in the legislature —have all been crucial to the progress and growth we’re seeing in the Mon Valley.”
