For generations, the Monongahela River Valley was the industrial heart of Pittsburgh’s economy. Its mills and factories produced the steel that built America — and the communities that grew around them helped define the region’s identity. When that industry collapsed, the jobs left, and so did many of the people. The effects of that decline still linger today.
