After over 100 years of operation, Westinghouse closed its East Pittsburgh plant in the late 1980s. The site had incredible historical significance, not only as a supplier of 20,000 jobs, but also as the location of the first radio broadcast. The loss of the Westinghouse operation was devastating to the community. RIDC purchased the site and worked with State, County, and local support to redevelop the complex into a world class, multi-use, multi-tenant urban industrial facility and provide the community with greater job stability. Now called Keystone Commons, the complex is home to more than 40 companies, including Holtec International and Eos Energy, and is considered one of the most successful redevelopment projects in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
